Puto are a steamed cake – similar to a cup cake – that are sweet, quite dense, and topped with mild cheese. They can be flavoured (such as puto ube) – or stuffed (like puto pao).

The ‘pao’ comes from sao pao – a filipino version of a steamed bread bun (from cantonese ‘cha siu bao’) which is stuffed  with a pork mixture.

If you fancy giving them a go, there is a good recipe with step by step directions here, alternatively you can also buy them from Mylene’s Munchies (delivery to Worthing, Brighton, Horsham, and surrounding areas).
